Seven

The next day right before closing time, Max waltzed through her door at Knick-Knacks & Things, carrying a big brown paper bag. Wearing one of his black suits, it was complimented nicely with a vivid green tie. He had a quality about him she’d never found in any other man. He was regal. He held himself like royalty but assimilated with her – in her skinny jeans and sweater – like they were one and the same. But she knew that wasn’t true. She was a small-town girl and he was worldly. First class. She went to the radio to turn off the Christmas music.

“No, leave the music on. Serenity, you look beautiful.”

“Thank you. You look stunning as ever. Nice tie, too”

“I brought dinner. How was the store today?”

“It was nice. All of the markdowns have really been helping a lot. It’s just heartbreaking to know that it will all be over soon. I’ve put my heart and soul into this place for the past year.”

“I’m sorry, Serenity. I really am.”

“Don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault I’m getting ev-” Oh boy! “It’s my choice, remember? It will be okay in the end.”

“I hope so. Let’s eat, shall we? I have spaghetti, lasagna, bread and wine. Do you have a place to sit or should we just sit here on the floor?”

Serenity shook her head. With his nicely pressed suit on, sitting on the dirty floor didn’t bother him one bit.

“I’m starving.”

She locked up her shop and they sat on the floor and enjoyed their meal. They talked about their plans for the holiday that was quickly approaching and what they normally did on Christmas Day. Serenity was a bit uneasy because of her blatant lie about her store closing, but Max never questioned her about it and she didn’t bring it up. This would end soon enough. With Max having a life eight hundred miles away from Mountain Falls, there was no way they could have a romance long-distance – those never worked. She resolved to bide her time with him and not ruin it by telling him she’s been lying to him. Besides, once he left and her store was closed, there was no way he would ever know the truth. It would be a lie that went away quietly. Except for her job at the property management company! She forgot about that. Shoot. She could come up with a plausible lie if and when, that ever became an issue. Were they still going to be friends once he left?

“Max, when you leave and go back to Dallas, will we still talk or will this just end between us?”

Max was now lying on the floor, propped up on his elbow with Serenity in a sitting position, leaning against his stomach. “Do you want this to end between us?”

“No. But I’m not dumb enough to not think it won’t.”

He grabbed her around her middle and forced her to lie next to him. “Look at me. I don’t know what this is between us, Serenity, but it’s more than will-we-be-friends-after-I-leave.
